Compaq Cup Final Result - India beat Sri Lanka by 46 runs, Tendulkar Man of the Match


India finally break the jinx of loosing in the finals and won the Compaq Cup against Sri Lanka by 46 runs in a high scoring thriller on Monday, 14th September, 2009 at Colombo. India made a huge total of 319/5 in 50 overs and SL all out on 273 runs in 46.4 overs.

India won the toss and opted to bat first put 95 runs for the 1st wicket by Tendulkar and Dravid (38), Sachin then put 110 runs with Dhoni (56) and then 71 runs with Yuvraj (56 of 41 balls). Sachin Tendulkar hit his 43rd ODI century with 138 runs of 133 ball with 10 fours and a six.

Sri Lanka also got a good start by Jayasuriya and Dilshan but Harbhajan Singh took 2 wickets and put them on back foot but Kandamby made a fighting 66 runs and put some resistance. Harbhajan Singh took 5 wickets.

Match Summary:

India - 319/5 in 50 overs (Tendulkar 138, Dhoni 56, Yuvraj 56, Thushara 72-2)

Sri Lanka - 273 all out in 46.4 overs (Kandamby 66, Harbhajan 56-5)

Toss -India, who chose to bat first.

Result - India won by 46 runs.

India lost their last league match against Sri Lanka with a big margin of 139 runs and they have to improve their game in all departments in order to clinch the title. Dinesh Karthik and Dravid and Yuraj Singh has not contributed so far in the tournament.


For Sri Lanka, Sanath Jayasuriya is back in form with 98 runs while Kandamby hit a quick 91 runs in the end. Angelo Mathews took career best 6 wickets and Muralitharan will likely replace Mendis.

New Zealand opted to bat first bowled out on 155 runs in 46.3 overs as Ashish Nehra and Yuvraj Singh took 3 wickets each and India successfully chased with 6 wickets and 57 balls remaining thanks to Tendulkar's 46 runs and unbeaten 45 and 35 runs by Raina and Dhoni respectively.

Match Summary:

New Zealand - 155/all out in 46.3 Ovs (Vettori 25, Nehra 3-24, Yuvraj 3-31)

India - 156/4 wickets in 40.3 Ovs (Tendulkar 46, Vettori 33-2)

India is playing international cricket after almost 2 months and they have to play well in order to qualify for the final because it is a very short tournament. India will definitely miss the hard hitter opener Virender Sehwag.

Sri lanka beat New Zealand by in the low scoring opening match of Compaq Cup tri series in the day-night game oOn Tuesday, 8th September, 2009 at Colombo. SL made 216/7 in 50 overs and NZ made

Sri Lanka got a bad start as they reduced to 5-69 in 25 overs but a brilliant century by Thilan Samarweera with 104 runs of 124 balls with 10 fours and got Sri Lanka to a respectable total of 216/7 in 50 overs, well supported by Angelo Mathews with 51 runs.

In reply New Zealand got even a worst start reduced to 6-41 in 19 overs and finally bowled out on 119 runs as only Grant Elliot shown some resistance with 41 runs as Lasith Malinga took 4 wickets.

Match Summary:

Sri Lanka - 216/7 in 50 over (Samaraweera 104, Mathews 51, Bond 3-43)

New Zealand - 119/all out in 36.1 overs (Elliott 41, Malinga4-28)
